EX-01 29000-29018 ex-4823-4872 Through Box

In 1913 CPR Hochelaga shops rebuilt 50 truss rod box cars with steel Z-bar center sills and Z-brace reinforced ends for express box service in the 4823-4872 number series. These were used in dual frieght/passenger express service handling domestic and international bulk mail and publications such as 'Star Weekly', etc. Some were even used in BC to carry certain types of seasonal fruits. Through box cars were painted and lettered as a standard freight car - mineral brown and white lettering.

Express box numbers dwindled quickly in the 1920s and stragglers retired in 1937. Nineteen were reassigned to through box service numbered 29000-29018. It appears that at some point cars had steel reinforcement added to the center rails and the inner truss rod removed around 1955 (more research necessary). The last car remained in service to 1959.
