SC-01 272014 47' Steel Horse Car
In yester-year horses for farm, work, consumption and racing glided between destinations over rail. There were 2 service levels offered; fast premium service on passenger trains for valuable race and show horses or slower regular freight schedules. Race horses were delivered directly to race track sidings for loading and off-loading.
The CPR had 2 series of freight horse cars for general movement of stock. Fifteen wood frame truss-rod cars numbered 257983-257997 built between 1910 and 1913 and fifteen steel cars numbered 258000-258014 in 1928 originally fitted with K-brake and stem winder. The horse car series were renumbered to the 272000 series in 1948 to make way for new steel box cars. The steel cars renumbered 272014-272028. Some cars were refitted fitted with AB bake and power winder around 1950.
The steel cars had a surprising long life. 272028 was shown in the 1970 and 1977 Equipment Data books (CS-39) in CP Rail scheme but, I'm not sure if it isn't a photo touch up. One car, 272019, survived on the roster to June 1985.
This kit is based on CPR general arrangement drawing G-76-C-159 Rev.A and over 40 photos generously provided by the CPHA and friends. I have submitted an article for CP Tracks with more photos and details on car history. I'll update the product page when the article is published. 1928 - cars built with K-brake 1948 - series renumbered to 272014-272028 1950 - 15 cars in service with 7 cars listed with AB brake 1952 - 11 cars with AB and 4 with K brakes (known numbers: 272014 K-Brake, 272016 K-brake, 272019 AB, 272020 AB, 272025 AB, 272026 AB, 272027 AB, 272028 K) 1965 - 15 in service 1967 - 15 in service 1970 - 15 in service 1973 - 13 in service 1977 - 13 in service 1978 - 13 in service 1980 - 12 in service 1983 - 5 cars, 272014 was sold to Assiniboine Downs, Winnipeg MB that year and 272019, 272026, 272027 and 272024 in storage on site. 1984 - 4 cars, 272019 and three cars, 272024, 272026 and 272027 sold to Assiniboine Downs. 272014 still on site used as a storage shed. 1985 - 1 on roster, 272019, later sold to Assiniboine Downs, and all 5 cars scrapped that year.Two models available block and script lettering.
