SC-01 272014 47' Steel Horse Car

Horse racing is popular entertainment today and it was similarly true during the steam era. In yester-year animials and riders glided between race tracks over rail. There were 2 service levels offered; fast premium service on passenger trains or slower regular freight schedules. Cars were delivered to race track sidings for loading and off-loading.

The CPR had 2 series of freight horse cars. Fifteen wood frame truss-rod cars numbered 257983-257997 built between 1910 and 1913 and, fifteen cars built 1928 in the 258000-258015 series. The entire series of horse cars were renumbered to the 272000 series in 1948 with the steel cars renumbered 272014-272028. Originally fitted with K-brakes some were rebuilt with AB around 1950. Both are correct and appropriate. ;-) The steel cars had a surprising long life. 272028 is shown in the 1970 and 1977 Equipment Data booxs (CS-39) in CP Rail scheme but, I'm not sure if it isn't a photo touch up. One car survived on the roster to June 1985.
